Overview
The Northern California LEND program at the UC Davis MIND Institute began in 2016. The UC Davis MIND Institute is a collaborative international research center, committed to the awareness, identification, understanding, prevention, care and cures of neurodevelopmental disorders. The LEND program is a collaborative effort that includes interdisciplinary faculty from UC Davis, the MIND Institute, and California State University Sacramento. Our LEND program strives to support the clinical knowledge and skill of professionals who are experts in their respective disciplines and in interdisciplinary knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD) in order to nurture the health, development and positive behavioral outcomes of infants, children and youth with or at risk for ASD/NDD. The Northern California LEND program provides clinical, community and research training that is family-centered, culturally sensitive and focuses on the delivery of evidenced-based practices and policies in our local communities and beyond. Our program has a strong emphasis in service for underserved and under-resourced areas of Northern California.
Purpose
The mission of the Northern California LEND program at the UC Davis MIND Institute is to provide training and education in ASD/NDD in order to foster visionary leaders in Northern California communities. Furthermore, the program also strives to train strong leaders who are committed to high quality, evidence-based services and culturally sensitive family centered care.
Training
The Northern California LEND program at the UC Davis MIND Institute includes long-term, medium-term, and short-term trainees. Trainees come from a variety of disciplines including clinical psychology, psychiatry, developmental behavioral pediatrics, special education, child development, public health, health administration, nursing, speech and language pathology, and parent- as well as self-advocates. Program faculty also span a number of disciplines including developmental psychology, clinical psychology, psychiatry, developmental behavioral pediatrics, physical therapy, speech and language pathology, public health, genetics, nursing, and special education. Each trainee is mentored by a faculty member within their discipline, and/or administrative staff within LEND, and works collaboratively with other trainees and faculty outside of their discipline. The program is led by an experienced team of directors that manage all aspects of the training program and include LEND program co-directors-Drs. Sally J. Rogers and Aubyn Stahmer, LEND program training director-Dr. Janice Enriquez, the MIND Institute Executive Director-Dr. Leonard Abbeduto, and Medical Director of the Center for Education in Developmental Disabilities-Dr. Robin Hansen.
Research
LEND research projects are currently in development. As this is the first year for our program, our trainees are in the process of developing their leadership projects.
