Overview

The UCLA Pathways for Students into Health Professions (PSHP) program is one of six MCH pipeline training programs funded through the MCH Bureau of the US Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration. PSHP provides a unique and exciting curriculum for PSHP students, as well as the support and resources to optimize their ability to successfully enter graduate or professional schools. Because students from disadvantaged backgrounds often lack the support and resources to understand and navigate the world of higher education, PSHP provides a scaffolding that allows these students to flourish and succeed.

Purpose

The purpose of the UCLA Pathways for Students into Health Professions (PSHP) program is to increase the interest of historically underrepresented students at UCLA in health-related careers with a strong emphasis on those professions that address maternal, child, and family health.

Training

Each year, a cohort of minority undergraduate trainees are introduced to the field of MCH through didactics that include a 4-unit course, summer field practicum at an MCH community-based organization or agency, and a volunteer experience in a student-run organization focused on helping children and families. Students also receive academic advising and career counseling by a faculty mentor.

Research

UCLA PSHP provides opportunities for students to engage in academic research as well as intern at various clinics and community-based organizations focused on child and maternal health in Los Angeles.
